CLICK-IT Exhibition Opens June 16th @ WGS Contemporary

WGS Contemporary hosts CLICK-IT! and Artists for Racial Justice
With much of the physical art world closing because of Covid-19, artists, galleries and museums have turned to technology and social media to stay open (albeit virtually), allowing visitors from anywhere in the world to interact with and view art.
WGS Contemporary Gallery (located in the DMV’s Gateway Arts District) had to get creative with how to bring art to the world. With so much changing so quickly, artists and arts organizations are still in the process of finding their footing. “With everyone in isolation, art is needed now more than ever to help remind people that we are not alone. Art helps us to dream, escape our current realities, and engage our imaginations in building a better world for tomorrow,” said Gallery Director Teri Swinhart (Bailey). “With this show, we all stand united (six feet apart, of course) and ready to take on these challenges and the new opportunities they present.”

Opening June 16th, WGS Contemporary presents “Click-It!” featuring works by some of the most exciting and inspiring artists, with a broad spectrum of works that showcase the current trends in art and the media specific works.

“By placing artworks of different materials, mediums, and styles in direct conversation, there is opportunity for new dialogues and perspectives,” adds Swinhart. Click-It! will highlight the many parallel and interesting artistic directions these artists bring creating a dynamic environment of exchange online.
“We will be using our online platforms to introduce exciting new art programming that aims to enrich, entertain and inspire during this challenging time.”
A special fundraising event “Artists for Racial Justice” is also scheduled online as a companion show, with the-proceeds for these special works to be donated to the non-profit organizations “Color of Change ” and the “NAACP”.

WGS Contemporary is a Washington, DC area art and special projects fine arts gallery. WGS Contemporary’s mission is to contribute to thinking about art, new media, technology, and social issues through an open access forum which we hope will facilitate contemporary and innovative projects worldwide. In that process, WGSC will expose the cutting edge work of artists pushing the new media frontiers of art. Projects using robotics, sensory perception, holographic imaging, self-contained video sculptures and others will offer an intelligent and fresh set of artwork that marries technology and art into a new creative dialogue in the visual arts.

Pate De Verre Class Fun!
This weekend’s pâte de verre class was a great success!
Instructor Teri Swinhart (Bailey) demonstrates how to apply color frit powder into specific areas for the class.
Pâte de verre is a kilncasting method that literally means “paste of glass”. The general premise is to mix frit granules with some sort of binder such as gum arabic, then apply the glass to the inner surface of a negative mold.

The Pâte de verre students made plaster molds in which they would cast the glass.
Lively discussion on ways to kilncast glass sculpture was explored by the class.
The students all loved the process and can’t wait til the firings are out of the kilns.

Now open at The Mansion at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland: “Interiors,” a design-centric show featuring modern works for the home – furniture, tapestries, objects, and more, in ceramics, fiber, glass, metal, and wood. The featured artists include Elizabeth Brim, Michael Janis, Sarah Nikitopoulos, Kenny Pieper, Chris Shea, and Rachael Warner. It runs through April 2, with an opening reception on March 2.

It’s a whole new world for artists, as interior designers make the shift to a new perception of form and function. Part of the switch is the unprecedented availability of previously exotic materials; part of it is an omnipresent technology that spreads ideas, trends, and new techniques with ever-increasing rapidity. Inspired by this, today’s artists are increasingly adding furniture and object design to their portfolios.
With furniture, tapestries, objects, and more, Interiors celebrates modern works for the home and illustrates how art elevates the everyday to the sublime.

American Craft Council Baltimore Show Feb 19-21
The American Craft Council (ACC) is a national, nonprofit educational organization founded in 1943. with a mission to promote understanding and appreciation of contemporary American craft.
The Baltimore ACC Show is the American Craft Council’s flagship show – a must-attend for craft lovers – runs from Feb. 19–21, 2016 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
More than 650 top contemporary jewelry, clothing, furniture, and artists from across the country will gather under one roof. It’s a great chance to touch, feel, and explore high-quality American craft and meet the makers behind the fabulous work.
Artist Drew Storm Graham is one of the outstanding makers that will be showing at the Baltimore ACC show – featuring his artistically handcrafted interchangeable wooden bow ties and his company Switchwood. (Booth: 2100)

Report from Chicago SOFA
Chicago’s Navy Pier was host for the 2015 SOFA expo.
As the 2015 edition of the Sculpture Objects Functional Art + Design fair wound down the red dots were spread around the exhibition spaces at Chicago’s Navy Pier Festival Hall that featured glass. The broadened scope of works included more painting and photography as part of the show’s evolution.

Washington Glass School artists Tim Tate, Michael Janis, Allegra Marquart, Audrey Wilson and Sean Hennessey were featured at Michigan’s Habatat Gallery, Maurine Littleton and Alida Anderson Art Project spaces that featured works by internationally acclaimed artists.
The art expo also featured talks by the artists about their work and notable critics such as William Warmus and American Craft Editor Monica Moses hosted lively discussions on the future of collecting.

One of the best activities for this visitor was to wander amongst the incredible artwork and strike up a conversation with the artists that you had a craft-crush and obtain real insight into their work and process. Some of the works truly left the viewer gobsmacked – with details and depths to the work that jpeg photos simply could not show. Although the show was just a long weekend, I could have kept finding new works to be mesmerized in each aisle.

Washington Art Works “The Grace of Craft”

On June 6, 2014, Washington ArtWorks will open “The Grace of Craft”, an exhibition curated by Über Collector Giselle Huberman. The show features fine art craft work selected by Ms. Huberman, and will be displayed in the “Urban by Nature” Gallery. Seventeen artists to “come together to create a show that illuminates the power, the unlimited possibilities, the beauty, the grace of craft”says Huberman.

The seventeen artists participating are each regional authorities in their medium. Artists include Phil Brown, Gayle Friedman, Rania Hassan, Sean Hennessey, Tamara Laird, Laurel Lukaszewski, Jan Maddox, Donna McCullough, Komelia Okim, Nikki O’Neill, Elissa Savos, Chris Shea, Tim Tate, Novie Trump, Andrea Uravitch, Rick Wall, Nancy Weisser.
This show will be on display through the end of June. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 10am-10pm, Friday-Sunday 10am-4pm.

AAC is very pleased to announce two exciting jurors, Melissa Messina, Senior Curator at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and Kathryn Wat, Chief Curator at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, who will select the artwork for Interwoven.
This exhibition seeks to emphasize and expand the creative dialog around the every-blurring boundaries between craft, design, and fine art. The jurors are especially interested in artists who explore DIY practices, engage in the reclamation of craft-based materials, re-examine design aesthetics, and otherwise reinvent cross-disciplinary genres within the dialog of contemporary art. Artists may submit examples of up to three projects, completed in the last three years, for consideration. The jurors will pick as many projects from a given artist as they like. The show is open to cutting edge contemporary artists working in any/all media, and who live or work in Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland, West Virginia, Delaware, or Pennsylvania. Art. Craft.
