During the week on the West Coast of Florida is the much-anticipated grand opening of the Kotler-Coville Pavillion located at the entrance of the prestigious Ringling Museum of Art. This new space was created to present Studio Glass gifted from these great collections and selected glass works from the museum’s collection.

Habatat Galleries will also present two important exhibitions: “Trends” – an eye-opening presentation that speculates on the future of glass as an expression for artists and “Currents” – which presents new sculptures of 30 of the most sought-after International artists working today.

Also, during the week is the grand opening of the new Imagine Museum, whose collection features rare glimpses into the 55-year history of Studio Glass in America.

Habatat’s list of events include visits to the Duncan McClellan Gallery, collector homes, a visit to the Chihuly Museum and talks by a number of the glass artists being exhibited.

Imagine Museum’s grand opening ribbon cutting will be on Tuesday, January 23rd @ 10:30 a.m.

The brand-new Imagine Museum opens January 23, 2018 in Saint Petersburg, Florida, near the Morean Arts Center, which has a permanent collection of Dale Chihuly’s glass artwork.

The vision for the museum comes via its benefactor, Trish Duggan, a glass collector and artist in her own right. Duggan wanted to create a space with both aesthetic and civic significance, a cultural institution dedicated to her medium of choice: glass. The new museum’s primary collection will focus on the explosive growth and diversification of the studio glass movement in America since the 1960’s, and extends to new directions in contemporary glass.

The collection of the museum seeks to present an historical Family Tree of the American Studio Glass Movement from the 1960’s to the present. This 55-year phenomenon is represented by 55 prominent glass artists who exemplify its vitality. The collection comprises almost 500 extraordinary works that highlight the connections and influences among studio glass pioneers through to the present. The museum’s collection was acquired with the help of Corey Hampson, president and owner of Michigan’s Habatat Galleries, who was acting as a “curatorial advisor.”

The view of the Atlantic Ocean from SCOPE Art Fair 2017

It may snow along the East Coast this weekend, but down at Art Basel Miami Beach, it was all sunshine and beach parties and artwork and music everywhere. A fun thing about Miami is you get to spend hours in Lyfts and cabs going across causeways to and from the beach exhibits. context.art.fair.miami.2017.alida_anderson

Washington Glass School artists were represented at a number of the incredible art fairs that took place during Art Basel / Miami Art Fair week.

When Art Basel first came to Miami in 2002, it was a satellite art fair and an end-of-the-year anchor to the Basel, Switzerland main event held in the summer. But in a perfect storm of palm trees, parties, a surge of interest in art (or at least the lucrative art market), and an Instagram explosion, it’s now become the biggest annual art event in North America, attended by some 85,000 people. And as the fair morphs into two dozen satellite fairs and a weeklong full calendar of art and fashion happenings, it’s also a venue to show how the art by a new generation of artists is being made.

Habatat Galleries 44th International Invitational

LOGO-44F

We are looking forward to Habatat Galleries celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2016!

Habatat — the oldest and largest glass gallery in the world — is getting ready to open its 44th International Glass Exhibition, featuring 100 artists from 23 countries.

The opening weekend celebration will take place May 5th-7th of 2016. The events will also include the famous Annual Masterworks auction, home tours, artist talks, museum tours, dinners, lunches, and more! The Grand Opening of the International is Saturday, May 7.

President and Owner of Habatat Galleries, Corey Hampson, whose father, Ferdinand Hampson, founded Habatat Gallery in 1971, says the theme this year focuses on the artists’ creative process and inspiration. The artists showing were asked to describe “what affected you in your life or career that caused you to alter the direction of your work. This could be something such as a personal discovery, a news story or a life changing event.” The artists’ responses are shared in the 44th International Catalog.

Corey says having the world’s largest international glass show came as a total shock. When his father opened the gallery 45 years ago, the only place to find handcrafted glasswork was at art fairs. “Drawing and painting have been around for thousands of years, but glass is an art form that … was completely functional until the early 1960s,”

Corey says it’s been a struggle, but the gallery’s focus has been to educate people about the art of glass and its possibilities.

Artists from Israel, Italy, Japan, France, England, the Czech Republic and many others will attend the grand opening on Saturday, May 7th.

Visitors can vote for the People’s Choice Award during the grand opening on Saturday, May 7th. This winner also will display his/her work at the Fort Wayne Museum. The gallery has also curated a controversial display in a pop-up space next to the gallery entitled “Peace/Piece: Sculptures of Mass Destruction”.
