The west coast of sunny Florida is where the glass art scene is hot! This past week, Habatat Detroit Fine Art held a glass extravaganza at the Ringling College of Art in beautiful Sarasota, FL. This was be their 8th Annual Glass Coast Weekend (GCW). This year the event paid homage to the past, present, and future of studio glass. The show featured noted artists, lectures, demos and a reception at the Ringling Museum of Art and the 5th Anniversary event at the Imagine Museum in St. Petersburg, FL.

The Glass Coast excitement continued up the coast – at Duncan McClellan Gallery, where Washington Glass School artists are featured in the groundbreaking “Dreams & Visions” exhibit (thru March 5).

10am-Noon: Glass blowing Demonstration by visiting DC artist Tim Tate in the Hot Glass Studio with Jeremiah Jacobs and the St. Pete Hot Glass team.
Noon- 1pm: The Danish Artists from Glasskibe talk about their collaborative studios and the inspiring body of work they create together
1:-1:30pm: Michael Janis will give a presentation on how his background as an architect and designer influences both his personal art and the Washington Glass Studio’s site-specific art installations.
During this lecture, Janis will talk about how community involvement creates successful public art works. He will also give insight into the inspiration and technique behind his evocative glass powder imagery.
1:30-2:30pm: Tim Tate’s talk at 1:30pm will focus on “Glass in the 21st Century”.

Glasskibe: The maritime history of Hundested (Denmark) and the imagery of Viking ships passing have inspired two of the harbour’s contemporary craft companies; cabinetmakers Egeværk and glass artist Backhaus & Brown. These two award-winning workshops have combined their masterful crafts in an innovative collaboration; namely a series of unique sculptures named ”Glasskibe” – Viking ships in glass and wood.
Michael Janis developed a focus on glass after working for twenty years as an architect in the United States and Australia. His work has been shown at major galleries and art fairs and is included in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, Massachusetts Fuller Craft Museum, Florida’s Imagine Museum, Fort Wayne Museum of Art and Museum of Glass, Tacoma, WA. In 2012, awarded a Fulbright Scholarship, Michael taught at the UK’s University of Sunderland and the UK National Glass Centre. Michael was awarded the Washington, DC Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2016. His collaborative work with Tim Tate was featured at the 2022 Venice Biennale at Glasstress.
Tim Tate has been working with glass as a sculptural medium for the past 25 years. Co-Founder of the Washington Glass School, Tim’s work is in the permanent collections of several museums, including the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum, Renwick Gallery and the Mint Museum. His work has been shown at the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Fuller Museum, the Asheville Art Museum and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and was Artist-In-Residence at the Institute for International Glass Research (IIRG) in the UK. Tim was named “Distinguished Artist in Glass” by the James Renwick Alliance in 2018. He participated in the Venice Biennale Glasstress show with Ai Wei Wei in 2019, the Boca Raton Museum Glasstress in 2021 and again in Murano in 2022. Last year, Tim’s work was featured at the Hermitage, in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Washington Glass School Co-Founder & Co-Director Erwin Timmers was at the Duncan McClellan Gallery for the start of the exhibit “Dreams & Visions; Artists of the Washington Glass School”. The spectacular show features works by Christina Helowicz, Michael Janis, Tony Porto, Teri Swinhart, Tim Tate and Erwin Timmers and runs thru March 15th, 2023.

The fun filled weekend started with a gallery visit from 7th graders from Academy Prep. They received a tour in the museum-quality art filled gallery, followed by a glass demonstration and more.

DMG School Projectannounces that they are accepting applications for two, ONE MONTH long glass residencies.Since its inception in 2015, DMG School Project has been able to provide 11 different in house artist residencies.
The residencies will take place on the DMG Complex in St Petersburg, Florida.
Ideally, these two “Artists In Residence” have worked together or are willing to work together both individually and collaboratively.
Residency includes:
•One Month residency in September 2018.
•Shared lodging included during residency.
•24-hour access to St Pete Hot Glass studio and cold shop; this includes up to 20 hours of glory hole usage and up to 125 pounds of furnace glass per artist, per week.
•$1000 stipend per artist.
•Exhibition in October 2018 featuring new residency work at the Duncan McClellan Gallery.
•Professional photography of exhibition
•Mentorship by Duncan McClellan on the business aspects of being a successful artist. This includes how to effectively market your work, making gallery contacts, and cultivating collectors.
DMG School Project, an educational nonprofit housed within the Duncan McClellan Gallery complex, has received generous grants from the Florida Glass Art Alliance, the Milkey Family Foundation, Hough Family Foundation Inc, Art Alliance of Contemporary Glass, and the Maurice A. And Thelma P. Rothman Foundation, making it possible to offer a four week residency for two emerging glass artists.

Lindy is a glass artist from West Michigan creates sculpture and wall panels made from layered digital images that are fused into slabs that exploit the 3-dimensional quality inherent with stacked glass and the depth enhances her narrative and metaphors, drawing the viewer into the eccentric and beguilingimagery within. Lindy’s contemporary surrealism is like opening a door and seeing a strange, new planet. One never know what to expect, it’s bizarre but familiar, just like dreams.

Lindy’s work shows how new techniques continue being integrated with traditional craft with the coming of the digital age. The art form of photo manipulation involves the creation of unique images and in some instances, signature expressions of art by photographic artists. Lindy is able to create an inspired transition between her photographic work and her sculptural glass.

‘DC-5’ – Works by Artists of the Washington Glass School
Duncan McClellan Gallery, located in the heart of St. Petersburg’s arty Warehouse Art District in Florida, will be showcasing five artists from the Washington Glass School.
Sean Hennessey, Tim Tate, Erwin Timmers, Michael Janis, and Allegra Marquart will be the DC five showing in sunny FLA.
Renown glass artist Duncan McClellan was one of the featured artists in the first international US/UK exhibits “Glass3” held Georgetown in 2008. Duncan has opened a hotshop and gallery that features rotating exhibitions showcasing nationally and internationally recognized artists. The Gallery in itself is a work of art. Duncan has transformed a 7,800 square foot former fish and tomato packing plant into a beautiful, multi- functional space. Lush fruit bearing trees create a veritable Eden within the industrial area that surrounds it. The grounds have become a meeting place for artists, visiting dignitaries and the community. Duncan also created the DMG School Project – an outreach that provide educational opportunities to both artists and community.
Beer, wine and refreshments are available for a donation benefiting the DMG School Project.

In addition to the exhibit, the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg will host an artist talk from The Washington Glass Group on May 12, 2013 at 2:00pm. Immediately following the lecture, the public is invited to a reception at Duncan McClellan Gallery.
