Brentwood Arts Exchange Features Glass works by Debbi LoCicero

The Brentwood Arts Exchange serves as an anchor for the arts-based community development of the Prince George’s County Gateway Arts District. Located in the Gateway Arts Center, the Brentwood Arts Exchange will showcase Glass works by Debbi LoCicero, one of the Resident Artists at the Washington Glass School. Opening reception for her show at Brentwood Arts Exchange is Saturday, September 7th at, 9/7- 5-8 pm.

Debbi will be exhibiting glass objects from her “Lace Series”, representing memories of special places and times in the artist’s life.

The piece, titled “We Are All Just Passing Through”, is from her Lace Series.Image is of figures that are within the sculptural cube.

Debbi said about what she feels the artwork expresses: “Memories from our past… feelings about today….. excitement about what the future holds….”

Call for Entry- Prince George’s County Juried Exhibition

The Prince George’s County Juried exhibition is sponsored by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County, Arts and Cultural Heritage Division. The exhibition will be on display at Montpelier Arts Center from November 2 through December 31, 2019.

REFLECTIONS OF SELF
Throughout time, artists have been skilled practitioners of self-reflection and introspection by constantly developing and analyzing a growing awareness of their self. This year’s county juried exhibition highlights the variety of artistic thought processes and ideas that artists use to create solutions to their own struggles with self-reflection.

ELIGIBILITY
This call is open to all artists who are 18 years of age or older who live, work, study, or have a studio in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Artists may submit a maximum of 3 artworks for consideration.

JUROR – JOHN COPPOLA

This year’s work will be selected by John Coppola, who served as Director of the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Exhibits Central, providing design, production and installation services to the national museum complex. He was appointed by President Obama to the National Museum and Library Services Board. Mr. Coppola has organized and managed exhibitions for the Museum of Latin American Art, the Smithsonian Latino Center, National Museum of Women in the Arts, St. Thomas University, and the Stonewall Library & Archives.

Baltimore Sun Reviews Glass Artwork in Montpelier Arts Center Invitational

The Baltimore Sun newspaper arts critic Mike Giuliano published his review of the 38th annual Invitational Sculpture Exhibition at the Montpelier Arts Center in Laurel, MD.

The journalist felt the exhibit serves as a lively reminder that contemporary sculptors have gone way beyond the traditional heroic marble or bronze figure atop a pedestal, and stated that he felt that “What distinguishes the exhibit is several of the artists use glass, not a material generally associated with sculpture. Far from seeming fragile, their treatment of the glass makes it seem as durable as any of the other materials found throughout the exhibit.”

Works by Washington Glass School Co-directors Erwin Timmers and Tim Tate were the focus of his review, as well as work by former WGS Studio Coordinator Laura Beth Konopinski.

Emerging Glass : A National Juried Glass Exhibit

Ohio’s Kent State University has a Call for Entries for a new exhibit: Emerging Glass – A new exhibit in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Glass program at the at The Kent State University School of Art.

Submissions accepted April 30 – July 30, 2019

On view in The Payto Gallery, at the Center for the Visual Arts, Kent State University, September 4 – October 4, 2019.

ELIGIBILITY: Any current resident of the United States who is over 18 years old may submit work(s) for consideration. Works eligible for consideration must be the result of independent effort unless the collaborator(s) is listed. Works must be no older than 4 years with a completion date on or after October 2015. All works must be original and not a copy or variation of another artist’s work.

ONLINE SUBMISSION OF WORK: Each artist may submit one to three original works for consideration. Online submission of works will be accepted by completing the SUBMISSION FORM (click here) beginning April 30, 2019. In order to submit work, you must complete the online submission form by July 30, 2019, and pay the entry fee.

Maryland Art Place Announces The 2^nd Tri-Annual Maryland State Artist Registry Juried Exhibition. This September, Maryland Art Place (MAP) in partnership with the Maryland State Art Council (MSAC) will host a statewide juried exhibition curated by a panel of jurors to highlight the wide range of artists and artwork featured on the Maryland State Arts Council Artist Registry. The exhibition will take place at Maryland Art Place located at 218 West Saratoga St. from September 19 – November 10th. All Maryland artists who reside within the state are eligible and encouraged to apply. To be considered for the exhibition you must reside in Maryland, have a Maryland State Arts Council Artist Registry profile, and have created or updated your registry profile on or between the dates of June 26, 2019 – July 20, 2019. Arts & Healing at Inova Schar Cancer Institute

The dedication of the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Fairfax, VA took place Monday, July 8.

The Arts & Healing Program at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute, a department of Inova Fairfax Hospital, is a collaboration with the Smith Center for Healing and the Arts, and uses art in its many forms to help support people in treatment and recovery and their loved ones. This innovative program includes a robust permanent art collection and ongoing exhibitions, performing arts events, and other workshops.

The Arts & Healing Program is a resource for families, loved ones and the community to support Inova Schar’s core mission and philosophy to provide patient-centered care. New acquisitions and special site-specific artworks many DC area artists – including WGS’ Michael Janis, Tim Tate, and Allegra Marquart are in the new collection as well as works by Foon Sham, Valerie Theberge, Alan Binstock, Wendy Ross, and Susan Hostetler.

The Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery at Inova Schar Cancer Institute is dedicated to exhibiting fine art that explores the innate connection between healing and creativity. Through a rotating exhibition schedule, the gallery features contemporary artists that address a diversity of significant themes, including spirituality, social change, multiculturalism, health, environmentalism and community.

One of the large commissioned artworks is a site-specific installation work by glass sculptor Michael Janis. The Washington Glass School blog has asked Michael to outline the work’s meanings and the processes he used to create the monumental recognition wall.

Dwight Schar Recognition Wall at Inova Schar Cancer Institute

Inspired by the story of Dwight Schar, founder and chairman of homebuilding and mortgage giant NVR, and donation by he and his wife to develop the cancer research institute that now bears their names, I worked at creating glass pieces that have both visual and spatial depth. Mr Schar’s mother died very young, lacking of good healthcare, and Mr Schar saw the creation of a cancer center and affording them the equipment and facilities needed to advance their treatments and research as a way to repay the community that supported his home building company.

The artwork installation is a tribute to his history and largesse. A rendering of Dwight Schar made of crushed glass powder overlaps cast glass squares that depict references homes and community, as well as the advancements that science and research could bring to the world. In the center of the artwork installation, cancer awareness ribbons are the focal point, in its natural clear state, allowing all symbolic cancer awareness colors to be seen within. The end framing panels are a special iridescent glass that has many colors that shift intensity depending on the viewer perspective.

The central portrait of Mr Schar is made from crushed black glass powder. The fine powder was carefully manipulated with scalpel and brushes to form the detailed likeness and took many hours and kiln firings to complete.

The clear glass ribbons have become the symbol of the new Inova Schar Institute – and Washington Glass School was later commissioned to make smaller versions of the ribbons as commemorative sculptures for valued benefactors and volunteers to the new Cancer Center.

CAH SYNERGY: FY20 Exhibit – Closing Reception

SYNERGY features visual arts applicants for the FY20 Arts and Humanities Fellowship Program (AHFP) general support grant. On display are pieces submitted by the artists that represent their individual style and body of work. This exhibition allows grant review panelists an opportunity to evaluate the applicants’ works in a gallery setting, while at the same time showcasing the broad scope of the District’s dynamic art scene to the public.

The works in this exhibit will be evaluated by a DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH) review panel.

The James Renwick Alliance invites media based artists to submit an application to participate in the 12th Annual JRA Day, a one-day showcase for artists in the craft media. The JRA Day Artist Contract — Space Reservation Application can be found online at www.jraday.org/apply.html.

JRA Day is sponsored by the James Renwick Alliance, an independent national nonprofit organization that celebrates the achievements of America’s craft artists and fosters scholarship, education and public appreciation of craft art. The JRA was founded in 1982 and fulfills its mission through public programs, publications, recognition of craft artists, and financial support, including contributions to the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Last year’s JRA Day was a great success. The JRA plans to offer free admission and expand our efforts to promote the show. In 2018 most artists sold individual works at prices ranging from below $25 to as much as $600, and they expect a similar group of buyers this year.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at the Woman’s Club of Chevy Chase, in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The web site for the event is www.jraday.org.

JRA Day is open to all craft artists who are members of the James Renwick Alliance. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are not a JRA member, you may apply for the show, but participants must hold a paid membership in the organization within a month of acceptance in the event and on JRA Day.

— Artist set up will take place from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.

— The JRA will receive 40 percent of all proceeds from the artist’s sales.

— Advance promotion of JRA Day is done through postcards, the web site, social media, listserv notices, and press releases.

THE JAMES RENWICK ALLIANCE CHRYSALIS AWARD FOR EMERGING CRAFT ARTISTS
2019 Focus: Mixed Media

The Chrysalis Award was created by the James Renwick Alliance to encourage and assist emerging American visual artists. The awardee will receive all of the following: a $5,000 unrestricted award, an opportunity to meet with other artists, collectors, and JRA members in the Washington, DC area, and to give a formal presentation about their work at an important JRA event in November 2019.

Emerging is defined as someone early in their artistic career, without regard to age, who demonstrates excellence in their work and a commitment to developing in unique and dynamic ways, but without major gallery representation or significant exhibition history.

Our 2019 award will focus on emerging artists working in the MIXED MEDIA craft field. In future years we will solicit nominees in other media. The awardee will be selected by an independent panel of jurors.

Eligibility

The applicant must be working in the mixed media craft field and show merit, skill, and innovation in their work. Craft is the creation of original objects through the skillful manipulation of materials. These materials were traditionally considered to be clay, fiber, metal, wood, or glass. Today’s artists working in a craft discipline may also employ concrete, plastic, synthetic fibers, recycled materials and other non-traditional materials.

The artist must have completed a four-year academic program or self-directed equivalent training within the past 5 years. Residencies, workshops, and/or a dedicated practice qualify as equivalent training. Applicants may not have had a solo commercial exhibition or be exclusively represented by a gallery or commercial entity. The applicant must have residency in America. Applicants are asked to supply five images of work completed in the past three years and answer all application questions.

Merit, skill, and innovation are the judging criteria for submitted work. Qualities that contribute to the success of a craft object include the skill of the maker, the use of the material, the refinement of the design, the originality of expression, and/or its cultural significance.

Please go to the JRA website at www.JRA.org/chrysalis-award for the artist application and instructions. Applications and all supporting material must be received by August 28, 2019 to be considered.

New WGS Creative Coordinator – Teri Swinhart (Bailey) – will have two shows openings soon! Both are collaborations being shown at The Urban Arts Space- Hopkins Hall Gallery as part of their summer series. The first is titled Making (or The Iceberg Paradox) running from June 17th – July 2nd with the reception on June 27th from 4-5pm. The second is titled Here/There running from July 29th – August 2nd, with the reception on August 1st from 4-5pm. OSU Hopkins Hall Gallery is located at 128 N Oval Mall, Columbus, OH 43210.
