In this special class you will create your own festive colored glass wreath, or you can make a larger one with a partner or friend. Easy to hang in the window or in the tree! Create memories that would work great as you go home for Christmas while creating art, for yourself or as a gift (for that special someone -perhaps a secret prince of some sort- or someone who may or may not be Santa?). No glass experience is needed.

Class 5004: Strips’n’Bits

In two sessions, you’ll create a distinctive piece using April’s unique pattern bar technique. Your choices along the way will explore the capacities of glass as a creative medium: Selecting colors—opaque, transparent, both? Cutting and layering shapes—bits and strips, irregular or not, deliberate or random? We’ll discuss the basics of firing schedules, safety procedures, and some of glass’s distinctive properties; work with glass cutting hand tools, chop saw, and belt sander; deal with serendipity; and keep your project together through multiple firings.

Class-size is limited; Intermediate level experience with glass fusing is a good idea.

Indian Creek School Alumni Workshop at Washington Glass School

Indian Creek School Alumni enjoy the company, the artwork and the creative venue of the Glass School.

Maryland’s Indian Creek School held a fun alumni get-together event at the Washington Glass School.

The gathering allowed conversation to flow freely!

The alumni held a creative gathering, having all the participants enjoying their company and making beautiful fused glass bowls.

The creative event brought back many memories!

The workshop showcased the artistic talents of all the participants.

The process of making artwork as the setting for the informal gathering made the night a lot of fun for all!

Ever wondered about learning to weld? Want to impress your friends, your older brother and that cute bartender? It’s easier than you think! In three evenings you will learn how to lay a bead, and handle all sorts of sharp and dangerous tools. You will be able to complete a small project and leave with lots of ideas and know-how for other projects. This class will teach you the basics of welding, metal work and design, joining, bending and finishing. And you will get dirty!

For considerably less than the price of a designer fixture, you can put your own name on one. Tuition includes glass, mold materials, and mounting hardware. No glass experience is needed, and electrical experience will be provided.

Class 2204 – Intro to Rubber Mold Making

This is a great way to make 3-D elements in kilncast glass. Think of the sculptural possibilities! Our instructor for this class was on Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) faculty as Asst Professor of Glass, and represented the USA in the recent international Glass Challenge competition held at Sweden’s Glass Factory Museum.

In this short weekend class we will tackle the basics of making rubber molds for the production of parts that can be duplicated in wax. Students will be asked to bring a minimum of 3 small objects (not more than 1.5″ in any direction) to class for discussion and exploration of mold production. Undercuts, part lines, multipart mold-making, and casting of waxes for use in lost wax work will be discussed. Students will learn about a variety of materials available and how to decide what materials are best to use in different situations.

Bert Weiss’ Master Painting on Glass Class

Led by master glass artist Bert Weiss, this three-day glass painting technique class features multiple projects designed to give the student a better understanding of glass painting and its enormous potential in fused glass. Bert’s techniques allow you to use vibrant colors without worrying about glass compatibility. The course will show you how to mix metallic oxide colorants with glass and create oil paint like-washes.

This course is suitable for all levels of experience. Students do not need to bring anything, all the tools and materials are provided for the course – just wear suitable old clothes and sturdy shoes… oh, and bring a lunch!

Bert Weiss studied traditional glass painting with Albinus Elskus and has developed and improved his techniques for the past 40 years. Bring any questions you may have had about glass fusing; within 10 minutes Bert should be able to troubleshoot! Cut off sign-up date is Jan 30, 2012.

Learn how to incorporate coldworking techniques into your glass art. This 1-day class will focus on skills that are the basis of coldworking glass on the flat lap grinder. You will come away with knowledge and the ability to work safely and effectively with coldworking equipment! Robert will explain and demonstrate how the various pieces of equipment in the studio are used so that the students gain familiarity with what tools are available and how they can be properly utilized for glass art. The materials fee provides student with several “Blank” forms that they can use to practice these techniques. Students are also encouraged to bring small glass items that are less than 2″ in surface are to experiment with. Class Limit: 8 students

Class 1046 – Turning Your Wood – Cuts and Lino – Cuts Into Cast Glass Panels

This incredible process will allow your wood cuts or lino cuts to be duplicated in a cast glass panel with out harming your original cut piece! What a miraculous way for that printing technique to be used architecturally! You can also print from the glass plate. Imagine a wall of your wood cuts all translated into glass, then gridded out within in a metal frame….and made into a 10 ft high x 20 ft long wall. Or as simple a single back-lit glass panel! ….The possibilities are myriad! This is the perfect way for a lino cut printer to enter the world of large scale public art or to incorporate a quality of translucency into their work. The process is very simple to learn ……. and it will expand your artistic dialog exponentially …. All while using your own imagery!

Here is this summer’s fun and unusual crossover class! Start here at the Washington Glass School making molds from clay or lost wax. After those parts are cast and cleaned up….we next head to our sister school, DC Glassworks and ladle cast glass over those inclusions and then pour molten aluminum for the bases. This is one intense class! While it will be a lot of work…..the results will be purely sculptural.

Class 1048 – Borosilicate Casting – Learn to cast components for use in Flameworked Sculpture

Learn the process of borosilicate glass casting for component assembly in Flameworked sculpture. Students will review the process of casting as it relates to borosilicate glass. Once cast the component elements will then be flameworked into sculptural works of art. Come learn the process and develop your skills in this one of a kind class!

In this 4 day class students will make rubber molds of various items, review “lost wax casting” process, discuss firing schedules for casting borosilicate glass, practice coldworking processes to clean up the cast elements, and learn how to assemble numerous components at the bench torch for creating flameworked sculpture.

Class 1050 – Glass Beadmaking – Developing Your Style

Glass beads have been objects of adornment for thousands of years, and are experiencing a popular revival. We will begin the class with a technical exploration of various foundation techniques essential to the success of all beadmakers and then progress to color, types of glass and ways of utilizing the properties of the medium. Whether as a component of a necklace or alone as a pendant, glass beads can also be an element of creative expression.
