Already know the basics of casting or fusing? Open Studio gives each student the opportunity to work independently in a world class studio. Tuition includes a kiln firing per session, clear base glass and colored scrap glass, use of studio tools. Class 2003 – Bas Relief in Glass – Overview of Deep Relief Dry Plaster Casting
Tired of working flat? Want an easy way to get some real depth into your glass? Here’s a fun class where you will learn one of the easiest yet most versatile methods of kiln casting glass to achieve bas-relief sculpture. This incredible method has endless fine art and architectural applications. In this two day class, we will discuss different types of glass and their firing schedules. Working with color and how it can affect dimensional casting will also be explored. Bring items you may want to cast with this method or choose from our image library. All materials and firings are included.

Class 2004 -Silk Screening and Painting On Glass with Joseph Cavalieri
This workshop will cover numerous painting on glass techniques, some dating from Medieval times, but most developed in modern times. Students will learn hand painting, airbrushing, inking, and silk-screening processes using kiln fired enamels. The main emphasis of the class is silk-screening techniques. A variety of silk-screens with patterns, graphics and photographs will be available for the class to use. The glass is kiln fired to make these images permanent on the top surface of the glass, which is called a polish fuse. Demonstrations on how to frame and light the work will be shown. Three professional practice lectures will be presented to provide insight for beginners and professionals. These include how to “package yourself”, “market your art”, and “successfully get into artist residencies”.Students can choose to leave the class with one finished work or a stack of painted glass samples, or both!* We will not be making the screens but students have the option of bringing their own silk-screens, and will be directed how to after they sign up.

Bring your fusing skills to a new level. Beginning fusers will learn to use molds and frit to produce bas relief objects, then will tack fuse them into a patterned bowl on a base glass piece.

You can compare welding stainless steel vs. aluminum, and pit the plasma cutter vs. oxy-acetylene. You will also improve your MIG skills, and spend more time on grinding, polishing, finishing and patinas. Bring ideas for a small project and you’ll walk home with it. Remember, this is a real, live, active, working shop! You will get dirty. Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.Prerequisite: MIG welding class or equivalent experience.

————————————————————– Class 1503- Found and Lost – An Overview Of Lost Wax Casting

Part One : Found (one day session) A hands-on course that explores making flexible, reusable molds for the production of repeatable parts. Students will be asked to bring in a minimum of 10 small “found” objects (objects must not have any dimension thicker than1″.) We will discuss all the objects in terms of approaches for making flexible molds, then identify the best choices to make. Lab fee for mold materials. Part Two: Lost ( 2 days) In this “part 2” course we will take the wax parts we make in our new flexible molds and turn them into “lost wax ” glass castings. Mysteries will be revealed about how the wax is “lost” and how glass takes its place. A variety of plaster mold making methods will be explained. Hand built versus poured? Reinforcement methods? Hi temp versus conventional plasters? Each student will make one small 3 dimensional glass casting.

Class 1313 – Gravity Drops, Handkerchief Vases, and Floral Forms
Are you ready to move past fundamentals, yet still need some more guidance from a professional artist? How about taking a course where you will create a vase by using fusing and slumping skills previously learned. Practice cutting, fusing, and slumping with this two-day class. Students will create a patterned design and then fuse glass together. Day two will consist of cutting the pattern for the slump mold and then allow gravity to take hold of the glass and let it slump into a vase.

Class 1302- Steel and Glass Sculptural Development
For this incredible class, we are teaming up with our sister school at DC GlassWorks to form this amazing collaborative experience. For anyone who has dreamed of creating true sculptural work, this is the class for you! This unusual class will feature 5 Sunday workshops, some discussing sculptural theory, while most are simply hands on with material in both studios. Students will be introduced to the basics of metal working, glass casting and fusing, and aluminum casting. This class is designed for anyone from beginner to the most advanced, no prior knowledge of glass, steel or aluminum are necessary. (An 18″ height restriction will be imposed on all pieces). Class 1304- Elements Of 21st Century Reliquaries
Reliquaries with internal healing objects have been important cultural objects for centuries. They have been made with a wide variety of materials. But what makes a reliquary in the 21st century? What elements can go inside? Which materials seem most appropriate in modern times?
In this class we will utilize clay and glass to explore current concepts in reliquary forms. This class will be split between a clay and kiln cast glass studio, allowing each participant the use of both materials and many techniques. There will be a wine and cheese reception at the end of this workshop to allow friends to see the work in a professional setting. Class 1203- Beginning MIG Welding
Ever wondered about learning to weld? Want to impress your friends, your older brother and that cute bartender? It’s easier than you think! In three evenings you will learn how to lay a bead, and handle all sorts of sharp and dangerous tools. You will be able to complete a small project and leave with lots of ideas and know-how for other projects. Class 1204 – Master Class: Painting On Glass with Bert Weiss
Led by master artist Bert Weiss, (just check who’s the most consulted guru on Warmglass.com) this three-day glass painting technique class features multiple projects designed to give the student a better understanding of lass painting and its enormous potential in fused glass. Bert’s techniques allow you to use vibrant colors without worrying about glass compatibility. The course will show you how to mix metallic oxide colorants with glass and create oil paint like-washes.
This course is suitable for all levels of experience. Students do not need to bring anything, all the tools and materials are provided for the course – just wear suitable old clothes and sturdy shoes… oh, and bring a lunch!
Bert Weiss studied traditional glass painting with Albinus Elskus and has developed and improved his techniques for the past 40 years. Bring any questions you may have had about glass fusing; within 10 minutes Bert should be able to troubleshoot! Cut off sign-up date is Jan 30, 2012.

Class 1205- Going Green
Green up your life by doing something creative to help the environment! This is an exploration into using recycled glass to make sculptural pieces, tableware, and architectural elements. We will delve into multiple techniques, including casting, fusing and slumping. Glass chemistry, coloration, and firing temperatures will be explained for each particular application. It is a fantastic way to learn aspects of any warm glass work while focusing on recycling! Once you start down the path of recycled glass, you will see more and more opportunities for experimentation around you. No prior experience is necessary – you are encouraged to bring in materials you’d like to try…and you will leave with several very cool items!

Class 1046 – Turning Your Wood – Cuts and Lino – Cuts Into Cast Glass Panels
This incredible process will allow your wood cuts or lino cuts to be duplicated in a cast glass panel with out harming your original cut piece! What a miraculous way for that printing technique to be used architecturally! You can also print from the glass plate. Imagine a wall of your wood cuts all translated into glass, then gridded out within in a metal frame….and made into a 10 ft high x 20 ft long wall. Or as simple a single back-lit glass panel! ….The possibilities are myriad! This is the perfect way for a lino cut printer to enter the world of large scale public art or to incorporate a quality of translucency into their work. This class will bring some serious color to your life, and brighten up your living space. This is the perfect way to use glass in a most practical application: ceiling lamps. You will design your own colored glass, determine your own shape, and have your choice of several different hanging or mounting options. For considerably less than the price of a designer fixture, you can put your own name on one. Tuition includes glass, mold materials, and mounting hardware. No glass experience is needed, and electrical experience will be provided.

Class 1104 – Hot Class Casting with Glass Inclusions and Cast Metal Bases
Here is this summer’s fun and unusual crossover class! Start here at the Washington Glass School making molds from clay or lost wax. After those parts are cast and cleaned up….we next head to our sister school, DC Glassworks and ladle cast glass over those inclusions and then pour molten aluminum for the bases. This is one intense class! While it will be a lot of work…..the results will be purely sculptural.
