We will use this clay to make fine pieces of jewelry such as pins, pendants, rings, beads or small sculptures. The basic techniques for this material will be covered, including tools, assembly, kiln schedules, firing and finishing. This class will be a precursor to a class next semester on adding glass and gems to your PMC pieces.

Class 818 - Lost Wax Casting

See the basic steps involved in lost wax kilncasting—from making the model and duplicating it in wax to building the mold, loading it with glass, and firing it in the kiln.

Students begin by making a form out of clay.....then making a rubber mold....and move on to make their first casting. Building on this experience, students then learn how to take a retrievable mold from a clay model. This mold allows students to make multiple wax copies that can be further altered. One of these forms is subsequently cast in glass. Basic coldworking methods are demonstrated and available to the students for further exploration.
