The Annual Prince George’s County Juried Exhibition, now in its 34th year, draws on the vast core of visual artists that live, work, or maintain a studio in Prince George’s County. This exhibition also serves to foster an inclusive spirit among the participating artists as well as showcase their talents, skills, and diverse use of mediums. This year’s exhibit is themed “Hope & Healing”, presenting works that reflect and symbolize what connects us as people and what gives faith and optimism for the future of our society.

34TH ANNUAL PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY JURIED EXHIBITION
“All art,” Federico Fellini once said, “is autobiographical.” One might go a step further and say that all art is an act of self-portraiture.
Prince George’s County presents this year’s county-juried exhibition that highlights the variety of artistic thought processes and ideas that artists use to create solutions to their own struggles with self-reflection.

This year’s work was selected by John Coppola, who served as Director of the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Exhibits Central, providing design, production and installation services to the national museum complex. Selected works by over 40 artists, including:

Montpelier Arts Center is located on the grounds of historic Montpelier Mansion in northern Prince George’s County and is part of the Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation.
The Prince George’s County Juried exhibition is sponsored by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County, Arts and Cultural Heritage Division.
The journalist felt the exhibit serves as a lively reminder that contemporary sculptors have gone way beyond the traditional heroic marble or bronze figure atop a pedestal, and stated that he felt that “What distinguishes the exhibit is several of the artists use glass, not a material generally associated with sculpture. Far from seeming fragile, their treatment of the glass makes it seem as durable as any of the other materials found throughout the exhibit.”
Works by Washington Glass School Co-directors Erwin Timmers and Tim Tate were the focus of his review, as well as work by former WGS Studio Coordinator Laura Beth Konopinski.

The 38th annual Montpelier Invitational Sculpture Exhibition will take place in the Main Gallery at Montpelier Arts Center. Artists from the region including Erwin Timmers, Tim Tate, Eric Dyer, Paul Daniel and WGS’ former Studio Coordinator – Laura Beth Konopinski.We all miss LBK as she has moved to Philadelphia to become the studio tech for the glass program @ Philadelphia’s University of the Arts – but it will be great to see her artwork!

Mixed Media artist – Rania Hassan has a solo show of her work April 5 – May 27, 2013 at the Montpelier Arts Center (Main Gallery).
Rania combines knitting and painting to weave sculptural stories of connections to friends, family, and the idea of home. ‘Threads’ is an exploration of connecting knitting and painting with fiber and wood. Rania says of her compelling mixed media work: “I am fascinated by the connections we find in our everyday experiences. How do we think of our place in this world? How do we fit in it? My work is about levels of connectedness. I paint, draw, and knit to represent these moments. We are all connected somehow. This series started because of my fascination with knitting, love for painting, and intrigue in the community I’ve found online with knitters from around the world. I think about how it links me to my mother, her mother, and all the generations of women who came before them.”

The Laurel Art Guild’s 41st Open Juried Exhibition opened this past week, with a reception that featured an awards ceremony. The opening had a great turnout, with standing room only during the juror talk about the artwork and the selection process.

First-place winner was Sylvia L. Valentino for her mixed media work, “Walk at the Pond.” Second place was awarded to Kimberley Bursic for “Cimabue Lived Here,” also mixed media. The third-place honors went to Nic Galloro for the wall-mounted sculpture, “Sorcerer.”

Each year MontpelierArtsCenter hosts an exhibition open to artists aged 18 and older who live in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia. It is chaired by a member of the Laurel Art Guild. This year I was juror, and spent a day going thru the entries. It was a surprisingly hard task to whittle down the selection – a very talented roster of artists submitted art for the competition, and 60 works were chosen for the exhibition. Virtually every medium is represented and the range of work is impressive.
I will be giving a brief gallery talk about the selection process on Sunday March 7 during the reception held from 2 pm -4 pm. The winners will be announced at that time as well. The reception is free and open to the public.

>41st Annual LAG Open Juried Exhibition The Laurel Art Guild (located in the grounds of the historic Montpelier Mansion) is a non-profit organization of people interested in the advancement of the fine arts. Each year, the organization has a call for artists to submit entries for their annual juried exhibition of artwork. This year is the 41st Open Juried Exhibition, and I am honored to be the judge for this year’s event. The membership of the Guild consists of professional and amateur artists expressing themselves through a wide variety of media. The Guild strives to promote public appreciation for the support of its endeavors through community involvement. Laurel Art Guild 41st Annual Open Juried Exhibition Eligibility Any artist who resides in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia (DMV) over 18 years old may submit two entries, however, only one entry per artist will be exhibited. Any original two dimensional work in any medium, completed in the last three years and not previously shown at Montpelier Arts Center, is eligible. Framed dimensions must not exceed 48″ high X 36″ wide. Wall mounted three dimensional work that meets the specific hanging requirements will be considered. Screening will be done by 35mm slides or jpg files on disk.
