In the opinion of many, he’s also one of the “earliest” green artists on the planet.

New DC Public Art Project Announced!

The Washington Glass Studio was recently awarded the DC Commission on the Arts& Humanities’ Public Art commission for an outdoor sculpture located at DC’s new Unity Parkside Health Care center, now under construction. The new health center is located just down the road from the Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens, a National Park Service site that boasts some of the most beautiful water lilies and lotus flowers in the months of June and July.

The Washington Glass Studio proposed making a 16 foot high arch of colorful glass and images of healing.
Inspired by the comments from the community meeting and site review– our objective was to create a sense of place for DC’s Kenilworth – Parkside community.

WAKEUP! "Sleepwalker" opens at Katzen Arts Center
This Saturday at the Katzen Arts Center is the official opening of the show “Sleepwalker” featuring work and collaborations by Tim Tate, Richard A. Schellenberg and Pete Duvall.
This exhibit is the result of many years in the making. The show is made up mostly of video components (featuring spectacular collaborations with Pete Duvall and Richard Schellenberg), with a few integrated sculptural objects. Come join in a walk through the mind of a Sleepwalker. Opening is Saturday evening, June 15th, from 6 to 9pm.

Judith Schaechter Keynote Speech @ GlassWeekend

Super-Supreme glass artist Judith Schaechter delivered the keynote address at the biennial GlassWeekend held at WheatonArts this past weekend.
Her talk was referenced throughout the conference and, happily, she has posted it on her blog: “Late Breaking Noose“.
Judith’s talk muses on the now maligned notion of “craft” –
“I started out as a young Turk completely rebellious against skill. I was conceptual! I knew what was important! And it wasn’t some type of mindless devotion to creating perfect solder seams. I was so bad, and this is true; that on at least one occasion, my work fell apart at the opening…
But then something happened…and it wasn’t horror or shame at presenting sub-par workmanship to a possibly paying public. What happened was 30-some years of practice. With little thought to the matter, I gradually improved. Until, to make a long story short, I now find myself highly skilled. And having come to this place, I now have the perspective to understand why it is worthy.”

She continues – “Its preposterous to not value skill—it has undeniable practical value! We want our surgeons and plumbers to be skilled! We admire, reward and even worship the skill of athletes. We even have these weird talent shows on TV that seem to be about skills. We fetishize craft in so many areas of life, but not in the arts!”
What happened to the idea of mastering one’s art? Why did it become so déclassé to master one’s medium? Why did it become de rigeur to make work that is constructed like junk (and looks like junk too?)

Tim Tate: Sleepwalker
Video show at American University’s Katzen Arts Center – June 15 to Aug 15, 2013 featuring collaborations with Pete Duvall and Richard A. Schellenberg.
Tim Tate is Washington’s best known contemporary glass artist, but his latest work has moved toward video installations. Rich in symbol, metaphor, movement, and mystery, videos, like dreams, enable us to participate in another reality and, through that participation, to be transformed. Hidden within is the latent content which will give the viewer an understanding of what is happening in the mind of a dreamer. For the Katzen project, Tim is working with collaborators Pete Duvall and Richard Schellenberg (both of whom he met through Artomatic).

William Warmus Lecture at the Museum of Glass

Art Historian William Warmus had a fascinating lecture this past Saturday at the Takoma (Washington) Museum of Glass. His talk was titled “The True History of Glass?”. In his talk, William touched on alternate histories of, and futures for, glass as an art form, concluding that we may sometimes need to forget the truth if we want to advance the art.

In his discussion, William talked about the condensed version of the American Studio Glass Movement, and some of the precursors to the accepted version of glass history. He also gave a shout out to Washington Glass School‘s Professor Tate, the “Glass Secessionism” discussions and the Washington Glass School in his museum talk.

New York’s UrbanGlass offers the Agnes Varis Visiting Artist Fellowship: Deadline May 31

The Agnes Varis Visiting Artist Fellowship @UrbanGlass will provide a woman artist the opportunity to develop a new body of work exploring ideas and techniques using the medium of glass. Varis Fellowships will be provided for one artist per year for five years, beginning in 2013. Fellowships are eight weeks in length, and include access to all areas of UrbanGlass’ 17,000-square-foot glass working studio in Brooklyn, NY. Support for this fellowship is provided in honor of Dr. Agnes Varis, a successful woman entrepreneur, supporter of the arts and advocate for affordable generic drugs.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: 5 pm, Friday, May 31, 2013
FELLOWSHIP INCLUDES
A private work space within the UrbanGlass Studio.
Scheduled access to all UrbanGlass studios, technical support and instruction.
Budget to cover materials and studio fees for the length of fellowship (to be outlined in the fellowship agreement, prior to the start of term).
An honorarium of $1,500 for artist’s discretionary use.
Fellowship does not include room and board.
DEADLINES AND DATES
Application due by 5 pm, Friday, May 31, 2013.
Recipient will be notified by Monday, July 15, 2013.
Fellowship must begin between October 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013.
THE STUDIO
UrbanGlass’ newly renovated 17,000-square-foot facility contains a complete glassworking studio with a hot shop, cold shop, lampworking studio, neon shop and kiln shop. The fellow may make use of any or all of these areas of the studio.
JUDGING CRITERIA AND NOTIFICATION
The Agnes Varis Visiting Artist Fellowship is designed to provide a woman artist with the opportunity to develop a body of work and explore new techniques using the medium of glass. Artists will be chosen on the basis of past work and specific plans for utilizing UrbanGlass’ facilities as described in their proposal. Artists working both within and outside the glass field art encouraged to apply. A selection committee of artists, glass professionals, critics and UrbanGlass Staff will review applications. Notification of selection will be made no later than Monday, July 15, 2013.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be over 21 years of age when fellowship commences.
Applicants must be female.
Applicants must have basic English language skills.
Glass experience is not required.
Applicant should be available in New York for the public announcement of fellowship in October 2013. (Availability will not affect selection process.)

Current UrbanGlass board members.
Artists who have received a grant from UrbanGlass in the last two fiscal years.

GlassBoston
You might recall the postabout the cancellation of the G.A.S. Boston conference. In the wake of the G.A.S. conference cancellation, The Society of Arts and Crafts, MIT Glass Lab, APG/NOCA, and Strattman Design have organized “GlassBoston” –
a conference that will be held in Boston and Cambridge this June. GlassBoston includes workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and tours, as well as a nonjuried glass show and sale that will be open to the public. Information (and registration access) is posted on the website of The Society of Arts and Crafts: http://www.societyofcrafts.org/learn/glassboston.asp.
GlassBoston has been designed for emerging, mid-career and established artists and the public interested in glass. Highlights include:
– Lectures by glass and origami artists Erik and Martin Demaine; Professor of Materials Science Michael J. Cima; and an associate from James Carpenter Design Associates.
– A symposium on the use of CAD and rapid prototyping tools and technologies, including artists Tavs Jorgensen and Norwood Viviano.
– Tours of the MIT Media Lab, Center for Bits and Atoms, and the MIT Museum.
– A one-day come-one-come-all glass show and sale, open to all attendees and the public.
– Demonstrations by Rik and Shelley Allen, James Mongrain, Pablo Soto, Mark Petrovic, Hank Adams, Deborah Czeresko, Matthew Szosz, Alexander Rosenburg, Wesley Fleming and others to be announced.
– Tours to studios, museums, galleries and private collections.
GlassBoston attendance is limited to 200, so if interested, you need to sign up soon.

This event showcases the many professional artists representing nearly every visual arts medium. You’ll have access to art galleries, studios, cultural centers and performing spaces throughout the Prince George’s County Gateway Arts District (a vibrant cultural scene spanning Mount Rainier, Brentwood, North Brentwood and Hyattsville).

This year’s tour features a guided shuttle bus tour of select studios, live performances at Joe’s Movement Emporium, and an exhibition opening at the 39th Street Gallery.
