Based on the aftermath of Tim Tate & Michael Janis’ successful Fulbright Scholarship assignment to the University of Sunderland, representatives from DC’s sister city (which is Sunderland, England) popped in for proverbial “spot of tea and a bit of a chat” – re: the possibility of another international glass exhibition to be held in DC in Spring 2013. (One may remember the fabulous Glass 3 exhibit hosted by Artomatic in 2008.)

This time the arts organization is proposing to expand the format to include ceramics and possibly another international partner; all together exhibiting at a downtown DC gallery space. Discussions included international workshops, marketplace events and how cultural tourism could be integrated. The representatives from the UK met at the Washington Glass School and at Flux Studios.

The Washington Glass School is set up for the Open Studio and Winter Show that is held this Saturday, Dec 10. The show runs from 1 to 5 pm.
The artists and instructors have been setting up areas with some great works – The Washington Post newspaper selected the show as part of the Weekend Picks. Great image by Pete Duvall of Erwin Timmers cast recycled glass!

Daily Art Muse Has Left The Building

For the past two months, artist/writer Susan Lomuto of Daily Art Muse has been an apprentice for the Washington Glass School as well as three of the adjacent ceramic studios – Red Dirt Studio, Flux Studios and Ani Kasten Studio.

Susan did the research apprenticeship as a way to gain insight into the lives of professional artists; hoping to see the how the artwork is made – the process – the success and strife – all from the perspective of the artist involved. Susan has (and will continue to) post some of the information on her blog Daily Art Muse. She also is planning on furthering the project into a book, and she wishes to create a full multi-media presentation (video, sound, photos, exhibitions) on the subject.

This week marks the end of Susan’s DC apprenticeship – and she has posted about her farewell. Hugs all around – an we look forward to DaMuse’s writing and postings!

Seeking Artist Studio Space?

Would you like to be part of a fun, dynamic group studio?
Flux Studios – adjacent to the Washington Glass School (near the Rhode Island/ Route 1 Eastern Ave border of the District) is now accepting applications for two studio spaces:
(one is available May 1, 2011- 10 x 16 ft- $400 a month; the other available June 1, 2011- 14 x 17 ft- $595 a month)
Flux Studios is a 3000 square foot arts space in the Gateway Arts District that houses the studios of six professional artists. Each individual studio has ten-foot ceilings, concrete floors and walls of finished drywall over plywood. The studio offers a friendly and collaborative atmosphere, 24 hour access, free on-site parking, a large flexible common area available to all members for projects, installations or teaching, an exhibition area with gallery lighting, a computer controlled studio kiln available for rent and a loading dock with garage doors.

Flux Studios welcomes Jessica Beels

If you have ever come out to the Gateway Arts District Open Studio Tours, you would know that adjacent to the Washington Glass School are some amazing artist studios.
Flux Studios, headed by celebrated ceramic artist Novie Trump, has announced that mixed media artist Jessica Beels will be joining the studio as their newest resident artist.
Jessica works in a number of materials, sculptural beads, paper, and ungalvanized steel armatures. Her work was featured at the Smithsonian Craft Show and at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria.
Jessica has talked of using the change in studio space to allow her to take her work to a larger scale. Ms Beels said that she should be all settled in by the end of the next month or so.
We welcome Jessica to the ‘hood – and look forward to seeing alot of great new work from her!
