The April/May issue of American Craft Magazine is now out – within the sheets of the magazine – or at the ACC website, one can see familiar faces names and artworks.
The magazine cover lists the contents: Fossils, Claws, Fur, Chicken Legs, Fangs, Fungi, Spider Eggs and Twigs – so clearly, the magazine is all about WGS.
Marc Petrovic’s beautiful blown sculpture “Not The Brightest Bulb” is featured with an article by Glen Adamson, from London’s V & A Museum, that asks if craft can connect the viewers more to nature.

Tim Tate is also featured in the article by senior editor Julie Hanus, titled “More Than Human“. Julie’s article is a fun look at how artists create human/animal imagery to create compelling insights to who we are. His featured work, one of his pieces from his eries ’21st Century Sideshows’ – a mixed media reliquary titled “Mermaids Past Their Prime”. Daily Art Muse blog author Susan Lomuto was the starring actor for the video portrayal of a chain smoking world weary faded maid.
Other glass artists – Martin Janecky and Anne Wolff‘s works were in an article about Habatat Galleries upcoming 41st International Glass Invitational, which opens April 24. The Michigan gallery will have a concurrent exhibition, titled “eXpose,”at that time that includes works by our Sean Hennessey.

Glass artist Nancy Donnelly has a solo show of her latest glass artwork on exhibit at VisArt’s “Common Ground Gallery” in Rockville, MD. (Through March 24, 2013). Nancy’s kiln-shaped glass sculpture and wall reliefs reference natural forms in glass, glass enamel, steel, concrete and transparent color. The Washington Post newspaper has a review of her show in today’s (Friday 15 March) paper – what a great review! Excerpt below is from WaPo art critic Mark Jenkins’ article.

“Nancy Donnelly
D.C. artist Nancy Donnelly does landscapes, still lifes and figure studies, all traditional genres. But hers have an added aspect, because they’re translucent. Six years ago, Donnelly began working in glass, which makes even the thinnest of her works sculptural. “Transmission,” her show at VisArts at Rockville’s Common Ground Gallery, encompasses rectangular compositions with just a hint of depth, pieces in which certain elements protrude from the plane and works that are fully three-dimensional.
The last category includes flower arrangements such as “Bouquets,” whose simplified forms suggest pop art’s directness but whose colors subtly shift along the length of the glass fronds. Among the near-flat objects are nature scenes such as “Sea and Sky I” and the more abstract “Tribute to William Morris,” a homage to the Victorian-era designer and theorist that employs a subtle black and green palette. Perhaps the most striking sculptures are those in which well-rounded female nudes, rendered in bluish or greenish glass, emerge from contrastingly hued blocks. They’re metaphors for creation and liberation, making them pertinent not just to one artist who has found her medium.

The British Council asked Washington Glass School Co-Director Michael Janis to act as a US Cultural Ambassador and write a series of articles for their blog regarding the collaborative art exhibit “International Glass and Clay 2013“, now open in Washington, DC. The latest post is an interview with UK glass artist Phil Vickery, a Sunderland-based artist that has shown his work at two previous US/UK exhibitions held in Washington, DC.

Michael interviews Phil and outlines his background in glass and his artistic influences. In the article, Phil discusses the benefits and outcomes of the (art) trade missions for him and the Cohesion Glass Network.
Phil also talks about his current series of glass sculptures. Says Phil about his techniques: “I use the material properties inherent to (hot) glass to express this quality. Working with the fluidity of molten glass, I manipulate it into shapes and also allow gravitational force to create my signature spiral forms.”

International Glass and Clay 2013
Pepco Edison Place Gallery @ 702 8th Street, NW, Washington, DC
Gallery hours are Saturday and Tuesday, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Gallery is closed on Sundays. The Gallery Place Metro station is within walking distance of the Gallery. The show is organized by Artomatic and the DCCAH.
The arts magazine Bourgeon has published hundreds of articles by artists about their work since 2005. All of the articles document the artwork and personal and artistic journeys of the authors as professional artists. is an anthology of contemporary art written by the artists themselves.
Bourgeon: Fifty Artists Write About Their Work is an anthology of contemporary art written by the artists themselves – published by the non-profit Day Eight.

The visiting artist duo kick things off with a glassblowing demonstration on Friday, January 25 at 8:00 pm.
The husband/wife team are based at the Chrysler Museum of Art Glass Studio, Norfolk, VA, where both Robin and Julia teach, and Robin is the Glass Studio Technician.
The free demo is followed by a special weekend workshop for intermediate to advanced glassblowers–Beyond the Vessel: A Glass Sculpting Intensive.

>The Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards is now accepting applications for the annual juried art exhibition and awards. $14,000 in prize money is awarded annually to the top four artists and a group exhibition of the finalists’ work will take place in September 2013 at Gallery B in downtown Bethesda. With a top prize of $10,000, The Trawick Prize is one of the largest and most prestigious contemporary art awards in the region.
Glass Artist Dave D’Orio won second place in the 2012 Trawick award.

The 2013 competition will be juried by Cynthia Connelly, Visual Arts Curator at Artisphere in Arlington, VA; Alexander Heilner, Associate Dean of Design and Media Studies at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore; and Vesela Sretenović, Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
Artists must be 18 years of age or older and residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. Original painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, fiber art, digital, mixed media and video are accepted. The maximum dimension should not exceed 96 inches in any direction. No reproductions. Selected artists must deliver artwork to the exhibit site in Bethesda, MD. All works on paper must be framed to full conservation standards. Each artist must submit five images (10 for 3-D work), application and a non-refundable entry fee of $25.
