Great Depth of Beauty in “Life in Layers” Exhibit

The 35th Annual Prince George’s County Juried Exhibition “Life in Layers” draws on the vast core of visual artists that live, work or maintain a studio in Prince George’s County. Juried by Philip Hutinet, Founder of East City Arts, a broad interpretation of the concept was sought, as each artist brings their unique background to the idea. Each moment layers on the previous ones and they create narratives and meaning through all media forms.

About the Juror
Phil Hutinet, a third generation Capitol Hill resident, is the publisher of East City Art, DC’s Visual Arts publication of record, which he began in 2010. Hutinet has curated or produced over 150 group and solo exhibitions in his career. Currently, Hutinet produces the annual Capital Art Book Fair, a spring event held at Eastern Market’s North Hall that celebrates the diverse world of art books.

To use any material, or even to make work that is ethereal, arises from widely varied practices, but always embodies the artist’s attitude about creating. Juried by Ginevra Shay – an artist and curator living and working in Baltimore, Maryland. She is the Artistic Director of The Contemporary Museum, and curator of Rose Arcade, founder of the Current Space Community Darkroom and Photo Program, and was recently artist and curator in-residence at Gallery Four. She has worked with a number of private collections and Baltimore institutions, including The Jewish Museum of Maryland and The Afro-American Newspaper, to aid with research and assist with digital archiving processes. She has exhibited her own work at Present Company (NYC), LVL3 (Chicago), Rock512Devil (Baltimore), The Finnish Museum of Photography (Finland), Notre Dame University (Maryland), John Hansard Gallery (United Kingdom), Galleri Vasli Souza (Sweden), and Flying Object (Mass). Her work and publications are in the libraries of Yale University Art Gallery Library, The International Center for Photography, Indie Photobook Library, Houston Center for Photography, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ginevra has lectured widely at The Maryland Film Festival, The Queens Museum, Oakland Museum, National College Art Association Conference, the Society for Photographic Education National Conference, and American Philosophical Society. She has been a visiting artist at Rutgers, Maryland Institute College of Art, and Towson University. In 2013, she selected as “30 Creative Minds Under 30” by Maryland Art Place.

The Brentwood Arts Exchange is in need of experienced instructors to teach comic book making for teens, painting and drawing classes for teens and adults and are requesting proposals from individuals interested in teaching those subjects. Classes should run for 4 or 6 weeks, and to be held in the afternoon (for teens) or evening hours (for adults). Include a class outline and a materials list in your proposal.

We’re always interested in hearing good ideas. If you would like to send a proposal on other art related classes and have experience teaching, we will accept those as well.

We are seeking a motivated individual who is passionate about the arts for a part time position as a Gallery Assistant. Job duties include but are not limited to the following:

· Providing customer service in person and over the phone including retail sales and class registrations

· Distributing mail within the Gateway Arts Center

· Routine office functions such as, copying, filing, data entry, and record keeping

· Hosting at special events,

· Assisting with installation of art exhibitions, including basic wall patching and painting, basic art handling and packaging.

· Maintaining the cleanliness of all areas of the facility, set up and clean for classes and events

This is an entry-level position with no experience required. The position holder must be able to lift and move up to 25 lbs. and be available to work evenings and weekends. The successful candidate will be outgoing and self-motivated to learn about gallery operations through hands-on work performing the duties above. Positive qualities in consideration for this position include the ability to communicate in Spanish, experience working in a retail environment, knowledge of craft media and techniques, and familiarity with the safe handling of art objects.

We are also seeking individuals interested in occasional work hosting special events and projects, including receptions, public lectures and third-party rentals. Most events occur on evenings and weekends, and shifts are typically 3-6 hours. Special events staff will assist with setting up, maintaining, and cleaning the gallery and classroom for events that include food and drinks. Customer service – greeting and answering visitors’ questions, etc. – is an essential component of the job. Special events staff will be on their feet throughout most of their work time, and should be able to lift and move up to 25lbs.

WGS’ photographic dynamic duo of Alison & Pete Duvall are each featured in the “The Sky’s the Limit, the 2011 Prince George’s County Juried Exhibition“, presenting art in all media that incorporate photographic techniques. Juried by Michael Platt, the exhibition features purchase prizes by the Prince George’s Ars Councial and The M-NCPPC Prince George’s Department of Parks and Recreation.

Robert Kincheloe – our head of the lampworking department – will be the first artist showcased in the Brentwood Arts Exchange’s new ‘Feature Artist’ program. Rob will be presenting many of his cast borosilicate glass artworks. His work will be exhibited in the Crafts Showroom area.

WGS artist Debra Ruzinsky, and ceramic artist Novie Trump are two of the of the artists curated by Phil Davis for the 39th Street Gallery show ” Trade. An art exhibition based on exchange portfolios.”

“Trade” is exchange; it means “commerce” and “profession.” The exhibition Trade at the 39th Street Gallery intends to be all of those things. It’s about working in the arts, meant to be transparent about placing the gallery and the Gateway CDC are at the center of all the things galleries do: supporting artists, building relationships, creating discourse, and yes, funding the continuation of those efforts. Based on the concept of an exchange portfolio and curated by Phil Davis, Trade brings together eight artists to each create a new edition of 12 artworks. Every artist will receive one work by each other artist, becoming one another’s collectors and inevitably also one another’s promoters. The remaining four works in each edition are available for sale – all at the same price of $250. It’s a rare opportunity to collect work by established artists at such an affordable level. Proceeds go directly to the artists and also benefit the Gateway CDC, which in turn supports arts programming in the 39th Street Gallery as well as work to continue developing the Gateway Arts District.

Tom Wolff @ 39th Street Gallery

The artist reception for photographer Thomas Wolff’s show of new works is this weekend at the 39th Street Gallery at the Gateway Arts Center. His show, titled: CENSUS: A PHOTOGRAPHIC SURVEY includes portraits of the Gateway Arts District artists, business owners and citizens.

Tom has said of his portraits: “I always like the idea of an almost life sized image of the subject for close scrutiny and finally for the love of their humanity. I almost always come away from my portrait sessions with gratitude and affection for the subjects. They are my collaborators, my co-conspirators. I leave exhausted and dry-mouthed from talking so much; like a one night stand.”

Tom Wolff studied painting at the Art Institute of Boston and Arts Students League in New York, and studied photography at Geo. Washington University and Photoworks at Glen Echo Park. Thomas is a freelance photographer; and adjunct professor at Shepherd College (now university), Shepherdstown, W.Va. 1988-89 and at Photoworks Glen Echo Park 1977-2005. His work has been published in Washington Post Magazine, House & Garden, Garden Design, Smithsonian, Audubon, and New York Times Magazine/Sophisticated Traveler.

Boot Camp for Artists – Free Artist Development Seminar

Noted art critic, art dealer and tireless promoter of the arts – F Lennox (Lenny) Campello hosts a free seminar on how an artist can move to the next level that is sponsored by the Gateway Arts Center this coming April 10, from 1 – 5 pm. Called Boot Camp for Artists – it addresses topics on maximizing the attention your work gets from the press, galleries, and museum curators. The program is free, but space is limited.

Artist of The Gateway Arts District Inaugurates Arts Center

>The brand spanking new Gateway Arts Center Gallery opens with a show that features area artists. Juried by art critic and expert of the local arts scene, F Lennox Campello, the exhibition will have two receptions – one for both the Arts Center Grand Opening and the ‘Artists of The Gateway Arts District’ and one at the closing of the exhibition. The grand opening marks years of effort to get the center running.

* Opening Reception and Center Grand Opening: March 19, 2010. The ribbon cutting ceremony will start at 3 pm. The Open House will follow until 8 pm.
