LGBTQ+ Glass Art Exhibition at National Liberty Museum

Transparency: An LGBTQ+ Glass Art Exhibit

For more than 40 years, LGBTQ+ identifying people have gathered in the month of June to commemorate their struggles, celebrate their identities, and advocate for their communities. What we now call “LGBT Pride Month”or simply “Pride” is a worldwide phenomenon that reminds us that the freedom to live our truth is necessary for a liberated society.

Philadelphia’s National Liberty Museum hosts the nation’s first museum exhibit of studio glass works produced exclusively by artists of the LGBTQ+ community. This is a celebration of identity and freedom that will showcase the diverse subjects, methods, and styles explored by these glass artists.Titled “Transparency” the exhibit is a celebration of identity and freedom that will showcase the diverse subjects, methods, and styles explored by these glass artists.

Tim Tate at Yale

Washington Glass School co-founder Tim Tate was invited by Glenn Adamson, senior scholar at Yale, to speak at a symposium at Yale University. Tim talked about his work, as well as artists Roberto Lugo and Stephanie Syjuco.

Glen Adamson gives a synopsis of the symposium at Yale.

The symposium was titled Objects of Dispute: Material Culture and the Yale University held the panel discussion on May 15th, 2017

From the Yale outline on the event: “One of the phrases uses constantly in the of current political discussion is the term “post truth,” which implies we have entered a period in which rhetoric overwhelms or obscures reality. At a time of extreme divisiveness in American culture, what can the study of historical artifacts offer? If every object is a fact in the world, perhaps artifacts have a role in anchoring discourse to reality? The close study of objects – the cultivation of material intelligence as a necessary aspect of scholarship – often provides insights into the past as well as embodiments of present-day debates. Can the engagement of an object in the past and in the present shed light on both contexts?”

Artist Tim Tate talks about how objects differ from other types of evidence, when it comes to histories of ideology and belief.

Washington Glass School’s Open Studio Spring 2017

Big Thank-You to all who came to the Washington Glass School’s and Gateway Arts Open Studio Tour this past weekend! A great time for everyone to see what has been cooking in the kilns!

Open Studios is when art lovers can visit artists in the Washington Glass Studios, see their work, and get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into their working processes.

Many of the instructors and artists of the Washington Glass School participated in the exhibit of work.

Erwin Timmers’ work looked incredible!

There was plenty for the community to ooh and ahh about!

The Open Studio got everyone inspired and excited about what will be created next!

If you plan on spoiling Mom on Mother’s Day -whether she likes it or not, here are some gift ideas that will appeal to her. (Remember: Glass is always the Perfect Gift).

Come to the Gateway Arts District Open Studios on Saturday, May 13th from noon til 5 pm and interact with the artists, see their work, and explore their studios, during this annual event. Even better – bring Mom with you and make a day of it! Treat mom to some creative items that she’ll love. (Just be prepared to explain the artwork’s meaning, because — moms.)

The Washington Glass School will be celebrating our sweet 16th birthday this year – be sure to stop by and see works by the artists and instructors. Washington Glass School artists – with work as diverse as their backgrounds – work together because their unique visions have helped build a new direction for glass sculpture.

Tim Tate’s work was featured at Art Miami.

Michael Janis received the DC Mayor’s Arts Award 2016.

Helen Frederick’s artwork explores the use of language and media in creating pulp prints, artists books and paintings.

As part of their Distinguished Artist Series, the JRA hosts artist Helen Frederick for a lecture in the Abramson Recital Hall (across from the AU Museum) on Sunday, May 21 from 2-3 pm. The lecture is free and open to the public. No registration required. Frederick will lead a workshop on paper-making the day before, Saturday May 20 from 9:30 am – 12 pm. Advanced registration required. The JRA welcomes AU Museum Associate Level Members to register at their Member’s price.

Come to the Spring 2017 Gateway Open Studio where you’ll have behind-the-scenes access to studios, galleries, cultural centers, and performance spaces throughout the Gateway Arts District in Prince George’s County! In Memoriam: Dave Cook

Is it with great sadness that we announce the passing of glass artist David Cook. He passed away rather suddenly Thursday, April 27, 2017, after a short illness.

Beloved husband of Toloria Braswell, Dave Cook was an artist who worked in acrylics, watercolor and glass. Dave worked with various combinations of painting and glass media for more than 30 years, designing works that combined traditional as well as non-traditional materials and images in innovative ways. Said Dave: “When working with glass, my motivation is to present new images using both traditional and leading-edge techniques to combine wood, stone, metal, feathers and found objects as integrated enhancements to my creations.” Always interested in creative activities, Dave received a BA in Fine Arts from Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD. He was a Studio Artist at the Washington Glass School. Dave was also a member of the Washington Water Color Association, International Arts and Artists, the Prince George’s Artists Association, Black Art in America Association, the Glass Art Society, and the American Craft Council.

Creative Crafts Council 31st Biennial Exhibition

The Creative Crafts Council (CCC) celebrates its 31st biennial exhibition supporting the finest crafts from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC. The first biennial had bold beginnings as the Exhibition of Creative Arts at the National Collection of Fine Arts, now known as the National Museum of American Art, and today continues a long tradition of exhibiting at Strathmore Mansion.

The CCC is made up of the Potters Guild of Frederick, Washington Ceramic Guild, Washington Guild of Goldsmiths, Fiber Art Study Group, Capital Area Woodturners, Potomac Fiber Arts Guild, Montgomery County Woodturners, National Capital Art Glass Guild, The Kiln Club, Montgomery Potters, and National Enamelist Guild. In this 31st annual juried exhibition, you will see traditional media from these guilds and beyond, representing excellence in fiber, enamel, wood, glass, ceramics, metals, and mixed media.

2017 Jurors

Maurine Littleton: Maurine, daughter of Harvey K. Littleton, is the owner and director of Maurine Littleton Gallery in Washington DC. The gallery exhibits and represents leading contemporary artists in glass, metal, and ceramics.

Rebecca Stevens: Rebecca has been the Consulting Curator of Contemporary Textiles at The Textile Museum in Washington D.C. since 1980. She has lectured on five continents, served as curator and as a juror for major fiber exhibitions both nationally and internationally.

Matthew Hyleck: Matthew is an artist, teacher and the Education Coordinator at Baltimore Clayworks. His work is represented by six galleries across the country and has taught a number of workshops in the northeast, United States.
