Also – Save the Date! Our studio coordinator – Audrey Wilson – has been taking the art world by storm, with great response to her work from shows like Art Miami, the Glass Art Alliance’s “Contemporary Glass from the Heartland” show and the International Glass & Clay show here in DC. Audrey has a solo show here at the Gallery at the Glass School this coming January.

Unbuilt Public Art Projects Exhibition – What Could Have Been.

Joe’s Movement EmporiumHosts “Public Art Concepts: An Exhibit Of Proposals”

Opening: Friday September 27, 2013 at 7:00 pm. Closing November 22, 2013

Coordinated by Alonzo Davis | Curated by Nehemiah Dixon III

“Public Art Concepts” gives the public an opportunity to engage with the artist in a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to create artwork for a public space. Given the growing interest in and number of street murals and 3-D works along the arts district corridor “Public Art Concepts” paves the way for a focused dialogue about what it means to create an arts district and how this change begins with the artist. The exhibit features scale models and proposals for public art works by regional and national artists who have applied for grants and commissions, some of which were awarded and others not.

Opening night features a lively panel of participating artists and reps from funding agencies that have diverse experience in the public art arena.

Cast Glass as Public Artwork – Photos of the Case Study

>

unless noted, all photos by Anything Photographic

The public artwork just completed by the Washington Glass Studio and Alonzo Davis for Prince George’s County Circuit Court was just photographed by Anything Photographic. The sculpture is made using the original bell tower cupola salvaged from the disastrous fire that destroyed the courthouse in 2004. The structure and copper dome were cleaned and made good, and modified to accommodate artwork elements that include cast recycled glass formed into images of the community and the legal system, sandcarved panels with the County Seals for each of the Counties served by the Circuit Court, and a neon bell symbolizing the original bell that would toll each day at 9.30 am when the Court was in session.
Titled “Rebirth and Renewal”, the artwork is testament to a proud community and its ability to overcome adversity.
